Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus
The Editorial Board of Journal of Endocrinology and Journal of Molecular Endocrinology is developing a collection of articles focused on the molecular mechanisms behind the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Led by Guest Editors Professor Matthias Blüher and Professor Stefan Bornstein alongside co-Editor-in-Chief Professor Martin Haluzík, this collection will provide researchers with a comprehensive update on the latest developments in the field of insulin resistance from across the globe, through a series of invited reviews and recent research.
“Insulin resistance is a hallmark of several highly prevalent diseases including type 2 diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease and others. Insulin resistance may derive from the interaction of environmental, behavior and genetic factors. Very recently the importance of adipose tissue/gut–brain cross-talk including microbiota has become a focus in the study of impaired insulin action. A better understanding of the causative mechanisms of insulin resistance may define novel treatment targets for cardio-metabolic diseases.“

“I am delighted to invite the authors to submit the papers to this special collection on the very important topic of insulin resistance. Numerous chronic diseases such type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and many others are closely interconnected with or directly induced by the presence of insulin resistance. Better knowledge of its etiopathogenesis or mechanism of its prevention and treatment may thus pave the way towards novel approaches to deal with numerous widespread chronic lifestyle diseases, in particular type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity.“

The Editors will be pleased to receive submissions of relevant research or reviews to be published as part of this collection. The following topics are of particular interest:
- Novel mechanisms of type 2 diabetes etiopathogenesis such as cellular senescence
- New in vitro and in vivo models of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
- Interactions between insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and their comorbidities (obesity, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, cancer)
- How infection can drive insulin resistance.
